This article is showing the initiative taken by our school to promote the right values in order to counter the effects of climate change. The students’ work was final presented to the international organization Climate Alliance and presented at the United Nations Climate Summit held last December in Lima.

This report by 15 year old Raquelle Borg, looks at an environmental situation. The problem that was observed and that is being investigated is the haphazard and indiscriminate dumping along stretches of the ditch and adjoining areas of the St. James and St. Aloysius Bastions in Żabbar, Malta. The area is carefully investigated by this young reporter and solutions for sustainable development are carefully outlined.

Xrobb l-Għaġin Nature Park and Sustainable Development Centre which is located within the Delimara peninsula near the locality of Marsaxlokk is one of the afforestation projects in Malta and includes the planting of around 15,000 indigenous trees and shrubs. The Sustainable Development Centre was restored keeping in mind energy and water conservation features. The project also encouraged the use of renewable energy and included the installation of two 5Kw micro wind turbines, 15Kw photovoltaic panels and solar water heaters to provide the required energy for the project. It is a shame that to date no particular use was made of such a project even though the advantages linked to it are numerous.

Fruit and vegetables are consumed daily in our house – and we are left with an average of 3 kilogrammes per week of food waste. Left over fruit and vegetables that cannot be used in smoothies, soups, sauces or pickles can be easily composted. The article speaks about the production of compost at home.
