On Friday, 27th January 2023, a group of Form 4 (Year 10) students at St. Margaret College Secondary School Verdala, Cospicua commemorated Holocaust Memorial Day. Holocaust Memorial Day has been observed each year on January 27th since 2005. This is the same day that the Auschwitz concentration camp was liberated in 1945 by Russian troops. Holocaust Memorial Day or International Holocaust Remembrance Day is commemorated each year in remembrance of victims of genocide across the world. It is an international day to remember in particular the over six million Jews killed during the Holocaust. During this day we also remember the millions of other people killed or persecuted by Nazi Germany during the Second World War.

Lately, I’ve seen a lot of pictures of sea creatures stuck in plastic bags or tied around ropes, turtles eating plastic waste thinking that they are jellyfish, fish washing up on shore, dead with pieces of plastic in their mouths, whales or dolphins caught dead with plastic and ropes tied around their fins. Why is this happening?

On the 31st of January 2023, the Press Kids group together with Ms Charmaine and a few other teachers visited the Farmers’ Market and “Pitkalija” in Ta’ Qali. Sadly, we saw a lot of plastic material everywhere we went. We noticed that most of the vegetables and fruits were being stored in plastic crates. Apart from that, there was a lot of plastic items scattered around the area, including crates, cups, bottles, containers, bags flying in the air, packaging and much more. Recycling is a must, so that nothing goes to waste. Everyone needs to ask, “Is waste really an unwanted, worthless material?” Definitely NOT. So before throwing something away, THINK and see HOW you can reduce, reuse, and recycle waste. The principle of recycling waste is today called the circular economy.
