Waste is not managed properly and in this case the sofa could have been renovated and reused in a proper living room. A lot of people tend to put garbage bags next to skips instead of inside them, thus making it easier for animals to tear them off and take materials out of them. As a result, the surrounding environment will get soiled and all of the material can eventually be carried away.

On the way to school, I have found this bone which has been there on the pavement for weeks. Somebody was really irresponsible by disposing of it near Tarxien Primary and Middle schools. This bone could be the source of a serious infection for young children coming to school or waiting for the school transport. Moreover, nobody cared to report this illegality to the authorities. Action was taken by informing the local council and the Cleansing Directorate to clean the area and by posting the photo on online media to make further pressure. This action proved successful as the bone was removed over the weekend. As a young reporter for the environment, I have also suggested the installation of CCTV cameras outside school premises to serve as a deterrent and curb illegal dumping.

Foraging is a new term for many students. But not anymore for the students at the Gozo College Middle School. With the support of funding from the EU project We Eat Responsibly and a grant from the WasteServ Community Link Project which the EkoSkola/LEAF committee managed to obtain, students from this school embarked on an ambitious project. Students did research on wild plants and invited a well informed speaker, went out to forage wild plants and last but not least cooked local traditional dishes with the foraged wild plants. Opportunities such as the one these students had should inspire all to work hard to preserve nature’s bounty and to revive these old traditions that have been around for centuries but that are being slowly lost.

Borage, stinging nettles and fennel are just a few from a wide variety of edible wild plants in the Maltese Islands. Traditionally these wild plants used to form the basis of culinary dishes and medicinal remedies. Unfortunately, nowadays such plants are simply considered as weeds mainly because of the hectic lifestyle most people lead. With just a little bit of imagination and research one can start making use of nature’s free healthy food resources.

Marine pollution including oil spills and waste dumped illegally into the sea is certainly a death sentence to marine creatures. More enforcement is needed possibly increasing fines to stop irresponsible people from doing these acts. Moreover, through educational campaigns, we will be safeguarding our seas for future generations.
