These are popular steps leading down to Marsalforn Bay. A can full of used engine oil, was thrown down these steps. Somebody threw it out of the car window to get rid of it without thinking what damage and danger is caused. Instead it can be recycled. It can be extremely dangerous and slippery for people, especially for young children, using the steps to go to the beach. Children may touch the oil. It is hazardous if it comes in contact with their skin or even worse if they touch their face, eyes and mouth. Also, the sight of oil on the steps is a great throwback to tourists and locals. This is a huge eyesore. Our economy greatly depends on the tourist industry. The oil together with the rubbish thrown away carelessly make the area look shabby and unwelcoming, besides being of great danger to people and the surrounding environment.

Many people take out their garbage very early and leave it in the street, not hanging. Dogs and cats tear bags that are in the streets and nobody cleans the mess. Some people use the street as a dustbin because they throw everything in the street. Skips are there for nothing because garbage is left next to them. Roundabouts and streets are used as toilets because they are full of dog litter. Even at the seaside people leave litter behind them. We should take care of our environment or we will end up living in a junkyard.

Waste

Waste is unwanted material. However, if we recycle this unwanted material we make Malta’s and Gozo’s environment look better. There are several ways how one can recycle unwanted material. For example the grey bag, and the bring-in-sites. They grey bags are collected door-to-door, and the bring-in sites are found in every town. Recyclable materials include paper, metal, glass and plastic, which are taken to Sant’ Antnin Waste Treatment Plant. The waste generated from homes in the black bags, are collected door-to-door and are taken to Sant’ Antnin Waste Treatment Plant. Another type of waste is the organic, which originate from plants and animals. This can produce compost in the long run. Civic Amenity Sites are there for bulky waste such as tyres and fridges. There are five civic amenity sites in Malta and Gozo. By recycling, we are improving Malta by having a better environment and a better lifestyle.

The 3 R’s

Waste, and how we choose to handle it, affects our world’s environment. The environment is everything around you including the air, water, land, plants, and man-made things. You need a healthy environment for your own health and happiness. Effective waste management is very important to everyone. The waste we create has to be carefully controlled. This should be done to make sure that it does not harm the environment and our health. Waste is anything we throw away or get rid of, that doesn’t get used. We should learn to practice the three R’s of waste management: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

Waste in our village

While I was walking around my village I saw a lot of litter and waste. I saw a lot of plastic bottles mixed with unusable stones. Some people are harming the environment because they are lazy to go and throw rubbish in the bins. Along my walk I saw a rusted tank. This tank is very dangerous because people and cars can have an accident. This tank can be recycled into different things. When we do recycling we help to keep our earth healthy and green. When we throw litter out in the street we increase pollution and we have a bad image of our village.

Rubbish around Żebbuġ countryside

Some people instead of throwing the rubbish in the bins or skips, throw rubbish in the countryside. Instead asking for the free bulky refuse service for old mattresses, sofas, car parts, they throw them beside the skips or in a valley. If we throw plastic in the sea we can kill a lot of fish, birds and turtles. The rubbish makes bad smell and bring a lot of insects like flies and mosquitoes. The rubbish can hurt animals like dogs and cats because when they try to eat from the cans their mouth can get stuck in it. To have a beautiful countryside people have to stop throwing rubbish in it and learn to recycle more. Waste can bring disease to people and animals. If people throw the waste in the countryside they will be polluting our fields. It isn’t a nice thing to see waste in our countryside.

Let’s make a difference

Let us make a difference to protect our environment and keep it clean. Battery bins for small batteries are found in various places. Valuable metals like cobalt, nickel and silver are recovered from batteries. The Local Council provides the Bulky Refuse service which is offered free of charge to the general public. Bring-in Sites on our island consist of four containers: Blue – plastic, White – paper, Brown – glass, Black – metal. Please separate waste at home by using the grey or black bags. At school we separate waste: plastic, paper, batteries and ink-cartridges. The EkoSkola committee in our school help us to be more aware of our environment. It is a pity that although we have lots of information about recycling there are still people who throw their waste in the countryside. Reduce, reuse and recycle. Much energy can be saved by recycling than by manufacturing new items.

Garbage, rubbish, waste, litter…

Do not put out the garbage bag more than an hour before the truck comes because dogs might tear it. We have three places with recycle bins to sort the material and recycle in our village. We can recycle metal, plastic, paper and glass in separate bags to help to reuse the materials and create jobs. If you throw garbage on pavements people can’t walk on it so they will go on the road and they will get hit by cars. If you throw garbage in the fields trees can’t grow, you will get a fine and pay for it. With rubbish in the fields the countryside will be damaged and no tourist will come to visit our beautiful island. For fridges, sofas, beds and more you can call the local council and they will take it. Waste attracts insects and contaminate the ground water soil and air causing diseases.

Let’s work with Wasteserv

I was walking in my village and I saw many different waste in the streets. If people get out the recycle bag very early in the morning, dogs can tear it. I also saw some bags in the middle of street. I was thinking, the bags can cause a car accident. Glass thrown in our villages may hurt our pets and people when they are walking. Damaged pavements cause many injuries, like people fall and get hurt. If we don’t throw waste in streets, we can have a better environment. There is the WasteServ Civic Amenity Site and bring in sites where we can put many different materials for recycling. So let’s make a better living by recycling things in grey bags and other waste in black bags. The WasteServ recycles materials collected in Bring in Sites.
