Cigarette buds and cans

Many people in feasts smoke cigarettes and drink softdrinks from cans. After the celebration there usually is a large amount of cigarette buds thrown on the floor in corners of the streets. To reduce the amount of cigarette buds there should be ash trays or people should be given biodegradable paper cups to put their cigarette remains in them so then they throw them in the bins provided.

The school’s EkoSkola Committee are taking part in the WasteServ School-Community Link Project – Promoting a Zero Waste Society in which through this and two other video in collaboration with the Video Production House Striped Sox, we are promoting the reduction of food waste and how to avoid it. This by creating awareness and also, giving tips and solutions on this. The EkoSkola team also worked g on the We Eat Responsibly Project with this same theme of food waste which is being tackled via the production of a recipe booklet Sustainable Cooking including tips and ideas to preserve food and avoid wasting it as well as recipes of leftover food.

A common problem that happens in feasts such as Carnival is that there aren’t enough bins next to stalls selling food or if there are bins, they are overflowing with trash. This leads to people throwing away their garbage in cardboard boxes or on the ground. To prevent this from happening, there should be an amount of bins in areas where food is prepared and they should be emptied regularly while the event is taking place.

More fish is being produced by fish farms but this has its disadvantages like the greasy slime that reaches beaches from time to time. Turtles are declining in number due to many reasons, amongst which people throwing plastic into the sea, which they eat mistaking it for jellyfish and chocking on. Overfishing had to be regulated by rules and is finally recovering. Similarly, we must take care of our environment on land. Clean ups can be a solution to this. When these are organised, the trash found varies from cola cans to appliances. Fines have to be paid by those caught dirtying the environment so that we ourselves and our future generations can enjoy it!

What we eat and whether we exercise or not, makes a difference in our lives. Surveys show that Maltese people are still confirmed as the most obese nation in the European Union. This could be the result of eating a lot of junk food which is quicker to find than having to prepare genuine home-made food and it works out cheaper. When parents buy technology to keep their children quiet, what they are doing is that they encourage them to sit down and play on these games instead of urging them to exercise. Students argue that they should have more physical education lessons in schools. Tuck shops should offer healthier options and fast food outlets should promote their healthier options, by lowering their prices. Parents must understand that their choices affect their children’s life so it is important to follow this advice: eat healthily and exercise more!
