Throughout the years we have constantly been learning about the 3R’S, Reducing, Rcycling and Reusing. Finally, as an EkoSkola Member at Mellieha Primary School, I came to terms with the true meaning of reusing through a project that we are doing for the school yard. Practically, pallets and used tyres are being used to create benches and stools for the designated reading are in the school yard.

Single-use plastic is one of the worst plastics you can use, because when you use it, you never use it again – you just throw it in the trash bin and nobody really cares. The thing is that only 7% of bottles are actually recycled. We shouldn’t us single-use plastic at all. This picture foucuses on single-use plastic. Most of the things shown can be found at home such as laundry detergents, cans, paper ect. I found all these things in an alley close to Dingli Primary School.

Have you been throwing plastic bags in the countryside? I don’t think that is very nice, so please stop this act of using single-use plastic. Single-use plastic is a type of plastic that is only used once and thrown away. Examples of single-use plastic are straws, plastic bottles, plastic bags, micro beads and Styrofoam. When they are thrown away, only about 7% is recycled. The rest is thrown in the seas. In the Pacific Ocean, there are currents that throw the plastic into certain places. These are called plastic soups and they look like actual land though they are right above the surface of the sea.

Plastic bomb waste. In the photo above, you can see a plastic bag, plastic bottle and plastic straw. All these items are single-use plastic while on the other side you can see a cloth bag, glass cup, metal straw, metal fork and glass bottle. All these are not plastic! Examples of plastic include: plastic forks and knives, plastic bags, plastic coffee cup lids, plastic bottles, Styrofoam and of course, plastic straws. As Mr Borg, Assistant Head of Dingli Primary School said: “We encourage children in our school to use reusable cups and containers for their lunch”. I agree with him because there are some children who use single-use plastic.

Have you seen this amount of plastic overflowing in a skip? Did you know that to produce 14 plastic bags it takes the equivalent amount of the fuel required to drive one mile? This picture was taken in Mrieħel next to some shops. Action could have been taken by reducing packaging and saying “no” to single-use plastic. As a student at Dingli Primary School, I am aware that lots of action is being taken by the school to reduce plastic waste.
