A cigarette butt may seem inconspicuous but can cause a lot of harm. They can start a fire in a field or woodland. Harmful chemicals and microplastics from the filters can contaminate soil, water or the sea, accumulating along food chains in a variety of ecosystems.

Littering is an eye sore and gives a bad image to our town and country. Diseases can be easily spread by littering as it provides a breeding ground for pests. If water droplets collect in the trash, mosquitoes can lay eggs causing infestations and nasty bites.

Litter can cause injury, such as if someone trips on it or lands on sharp materials such as metal or glass that can easily hurt. Cigarette butts can start a fire if thrown in gardens or parks. They also contain arsenic which can seep in the soil and water and contaminate them.

Litter can block culverts which can cause roads to floods. Plastic litter can end up in the sea harming wildlife as it is easily mistaken for food. Plastic will not biodegrade and therefore will remain on the planet if not recycled.
