EcoSchools committee members planted various crops at school of which potatoes, rucola and carrots. Since not much soil is available on the school grounds seeds were sown in plastic cans and containers. In so doing unwanted material was re-used thus reducing landfill waste. Moreover, through this practice the students highlighted the importance of consuming local products as much as possible in order to keep one’s carbon and water footprint to a minimum.

Climate Change is happening and it’s affecting the whole world, from the tropics to the poles. Taking a whole school approach the students at Gozo College Middle School learned how humans are contributing to climate change and how one can take action to solve this problem. A Fun Walk was organised to raise awareness on climate change and encouraged action focused on a number of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) mainly Climate Action, Clean Water and Sanitation.

Students at Gozo College Middle School carried out a litter survey during a Nature Walk in one of Gozo’s valleys. The students teamed up in groups and recorded litter found along the valley. Over 30kgs of litter was collected and thanks to their effort the freshwater course was cleaned. The students are putting into action their motto, ‘Never too little to care and do our share’, and the look on their faces says it all!!

Sadly, the sight of a squashed hedgehog is a familiar one. Road signs warning drivers to look out for these spiny creatures have been put up but more need to be added in some areas. Drivers need to pay carefully attention especially when using country roads. As clearly stated by a member of the Hedgehog Preservation Society in Britain, “Hedgehogs don’t have much of a flight defence. They just curl up and wait for the danger to go away but if the danger is a car, their prickles are no defence.”

The surge in property development and construction industry is taking its toll on the aesthetic of Malta’s skyline and the traditional character of villages. There seems to be no end in sight for the eyesores!!
