Chogm 2015 was a very eventful and interesting encounter as many subjects of various issues affecting us today were discussed. The most striking out of them all was the ‘Orange the world’ Campaign, which includes letting women’s voices be heard and Women’s rights be treated with all fairness. Other hot topics such as climate change, a resilient society and immigration were discussed.

School Canteens: What Are We Really Eating?

Earlier this year, the Ekoskola committee, who is focusing on healthy eating as part of this year’s aims for St. Monica School Gżira, decided to create an appendix to determine what the eating choices for the students include, and how these could be improved to help, both to improve the general health of the students and to modify the menu to include more environmentally friendly options. Two students, one of them being myself, paid a visit to the school’s tuck shop to find out what exactly we were eating.

The children of our generation wish for many expensive things, and obviously, families and friends wish for the child to be happy, so toy manufacturers and tech companies work even harder for their products to be sold. But, have we ever wondered what the less-unfortunate want for Christmas? We have always thought that this is a situation in Third World countries, in fact, only 1 of 3 children know that there are less unfortunate people in our small island, Malta.

We should all do our good share to keep the environment clean and help it in every way possible, by picking up litter, by promoting ways not to pollute and much more. We should all do our share without boasting, as Blaise Pascal cleverly quotes: ‘The noble deeds that are concealed are most esteemed’.

“Your conscience is the measure of honesty of your selfishness. Listen to it carefully.” It is a common temptation for one to vandalise the environment by getting rid of whatever he needs to throw away anywhere he deems is comfortable for him. Our conscience however should help us to be aware of our bad doings and rethink our actions to avoid harming the environment around us.
