Unfortunately, most people are not aware of the harm plastic is causing the environment. Possible solutions are to educate people when using plastic and to not dispose of it in the wrong place. Instead of buying plastic bottles we can use glass bottles. Once we are ready from washing liquid, instead of buying new ones we can refill big bottles.

It takes 500 – 1000 years for plastic to degrade. The most common types of litter found on beaches are all made from plastic. But the question is: how are we going to stop this?

This year, Mellieħa’s EkoSkola members chose the slogan ‘Litter less in Mellieħa’ as part of their litterless campaign and yremalta project. After doing an environmental review at school to check if waste is being separated in each and every room, it was time to check the litter situation around the school’s outskirts.

Marine litter originates from many sources and causes a wide range of environmental, economic, safety, health and cultural impacts. For example, marine litter can cause harm to sea life if ingested or even death if a marine mammal becomes entangled in litter (PEW, 2018). But there other consequences as a result of all this litter ending up in the oceans and seas. Does plastic affect sea water conditions? This study investigated the effects of marine litter, especially plastic, on sea water. Following an outdoor classroom activity held at Ħondoq Bay (Figure 1), a small sandy beach in the South East of Gozo, the students decided to investigate the effects of plastic litter on sea water temperature and sea water pH levels.
