The rubble wall makes a huge part of the Maltese culture and the rural environment. It is a pity that in some areas, its efficiency is not appreciated enough. In this picture, the rubble wall has been replaced by the building of bricks to speed up work. The craft of building rubble walls is done by choosing rocks of different size and shape, which are then placed gently with caution and precision on top of each other. This is very beneficial to the environment due to the fact that it stops the wind from spoiling the crops but at the same time it lets air pass through to the soil. It also serves as a habitat to various small animals, such as the Maltese wall lizard. Why are we avoiding the use of the traditional method to let in new methods which are such an eyesore?

In such a world we are living in, we do not find enough time to appreciate the food we are eating and consuming, but we really should care more. Since the students of St. Monica School Gzira, want to raise awareness about this, our Eko-Skola committee decided to build a roof garden at our school. The roof garden will give us the benefit of growing our own organic food, which will be used in the school’s tuck shop and the organic waste left will be reused in the soil. Another benefit is that our biology students will have the opportunity to plant their own crops which they will use for their experiments.

Earlier this year, the Ekoskola committee, who is focusing on healthy eating as part of this year’s aims for St. Monica School Gżira, decided to create an appendix to determine what the eating choices for the students include, and how these could be improved to help, both to improve the general health of the students and to modify the menu to include more environmentally friendly options. Two students, one of them being myself, paid a visit to the school’s tuck shop to find out what exactly we were eating.
