Protecting Dwejra

Dwejra is a Natura 2000 site but unfortunately it is a very popular littering site. Walking down to Dwejra from San Lawrenz village thorugh the old path there are heaps of various sizes of rubble, debris, broken tiles and waste every few steps. It is a good thing that Fungus Rock is protected and it is illegal to go on it because at this rate it would end up as a dump site as well.

Wara li l-iskola tgħallimt dwar pjanti endemici u indiġeni ta’ Malta, ridt immur mixja fid-Dwejra biex nara ftit mil-pjanti li semmejna, speċjalment is-Sempreviva ta’ Għawdex li tikber fil-blat hemmek. Other students might say that they have been lucky to go on a foreign exchange to Poland but what they do not know is the hard work and initiatives the duo Kurt and Lenard have taken throughout these four years while at secondary school….all in the name of the environment.

The objectives behind this project is to reduce the size of the black bag, make better use of landfill availability, reduce bio waste landfilling, and avoiding Green House Gas emissions to then increase Renewable Energy generation from Bio Waste. All the community of our school is taking part in this project and we are changing our waste disposal routine by separating: 1) Food Waste – Cooked & Raw, Fish & Shellfish, Bread & Pasta, Tea bags & grinded coffee. 2) Food Preparation Waste – Fruit & Vegetable peels, Egg shells, 3) Paper/Napkins/Newspapers contaminated with Food Waste 4) Leaves & Flowers To be able to do this Wasteserv Malta gave us organic bags which were given to us by the Head of School and the members of EkoSkola committee. We are doing our best to make this project a success.

The Students’ Council of St Margaret College, Verdala, made the environment one of its priorities this year. In fact they’ve been the main driving force behind the school’s eTwinning project ‘My Footprint Counts’ and have collaborated with schools in Poland, Portugal and Georgia to raise awareness of the Carbon Footprint of our daily choices. The aim was that the school ends the year with a better awareness of the environmental impact of everyday actions, because it was felt many teenagers don’t really appreciate their environmental responsibility.
