Therefore, we have chosen to focus our research on obesity. Our research is based on 100 questionnaires distributed to a representative sample of the population, as well as an interview with a professional chef.

As form 3 students in a church school, we are already observing some form of imbalance as regards family values and basic care of children. According to Cutajar (2017) as reported in the Times of Malta, ‘850 to 900 cases of child neglect [are] investigated by the authorities every year’. This shameful figure encouraged us to choose this topic for our project as we consider this a shocking number for such a small island. The outcome of our research is meant to increase awareness about this issue among Maltese people.

We have chosen this topic because we believe that many Maltese children suffer from abuse, and that there is not enough awareness about it and how to deal with it. Our aim is to raise awareness about this issue and how to seek help. We would like to encourage children to overcome their fear to talk about this problem because by speaking about it they can help themselves and others, and decrease child abuse.

What we eat and whether we exercise or not, makes a difference in our lives. Surveys show that Maltese people are still confirmed as the most obese nation in the European Union. This could be the result of eating a lot of junk food which is quicker to find than having to prepare genuine home-made food and it works out cheaper. When parents buy technology to keep their children quiet, what they are doing is that they encourage them to sit down and play on these games instead of urging them to exercise. Students argue that they should have more physical education lessons in schools. Tuck shops should offer healthier options and fast food outlets should promote their healthier options, by lowering their prices. Parents must understand that their choices affect their children’s life so it is important to follow this advice: eat healthily and exercise more!

For Global Education Week 2017 with the theme ‘My World Depends on us!’ we wanted to think of an idea out of the box. After a brainstorming exercise we came up with the idea of inviting over to our school three former students of Verdala. These three special young men have something in common. They have passed through difficult health problems but now are using their experiences to help others! Amazing actions by people so young!

The short article deals with how an enjoyable walk in the countryside can be ruined with broken signs, RTO and No Entry messages, unleashed dogs, and at time even ‘farmers’ who block the passage of the passers by. Is it really possible that the natural, undeveloped areas of the Maltese islands are private property? If so, why are they recommended as nature walks by the Malta Coastal Walk Book? What action should be taken by the authorities concerned?

Our elderly community can offer enriching experiences from which the younger generation can learn a lot. Today most people are spoilt for choice, but before, life was different; During the Second World War, Malta was heavily bombarded. This led to a dramatic change in their lifestyles. People had to adapt. They changed their routines to survive. From their experiences we can learn how to live in a sustainable way.
