In Paola, a block of apartments was built next to a reservoir. Every time it rains, the lower levels of the building are flooded as rain water seeps through the rocks. A water pump is used to pump out water directly into the street, creating a hazard for passing cars and pedestrians. This waste of rain water could have been prevented with some planning before the building was made. The nearby outlets of the reservoir could have been cleaned and connected to the building’s waterworks system for water provision of the block of apartments.

Landa żebgħa, lasta biex tħawwad…pinzell jonqos! Iż-żebgħa hija tossika u tagħmel ħafna ħsara lill-ħamrija u lill-pjanti. Il-ħadid jissaddad u l-plastik idum ħafna biex jitmermer. Barraminhekk, iż-żewġ materjali jagħmlu ħsara lill-ambjent. Għalhekk importanti li ma narmux barra!

EcoSchools committee members planted various crops at school of which potatoes, rucola and carrots. Since not much soil is available on the school grounds seeds were sown in plastic cans and containers. In so doing unwanted material was re-used thus reducing landfill waste. Moreover, through this practice the students highlighted the importance of consuming local products as much as possible in order to keep one’s carbon and water footprint to a minimum.

Over the past few months, I have been helping a group of people with special needs by doing activities, every Friday evening. Our meeting place is provided by the parish chaplain. Amongst the many activities, I have decided to grow local oak trees, by re-using ice-cream cups, therefore teaching the people with special needs, the importance of trees, and how to re-use our waste food containers, rather than throwing them for recycling.
