At Tarxien Middle School the Minions went green thanks to Ms.Carmen Bonnici LSE supported by students. Old car tyres were reused as a decorative planter in our school and this embellished greatly our school environment. I suggest that other schools or other organisations follow suit even by using other recyclable materials.

Sometimes we over worry over small matters but our concerns re-the environment should never be underestimated. Considering the increasing number of motor vehicles in Malta, reusing old tyres as decorative planters is certainly an excellent idea which can be easily used in public playgrounds or as innovative street furniture.

As trees breathe in polluted air, a new life is just beginning. Air quality in the vicinity of our school is negatively affected by heavy traffic, so the need to plant more trees is highly recommended. In fact, at our school, ERA (Environment and Resources Authority) officials have recently installed apparatus to monitor levels of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) mostly produced by motor vehicles. Our school is participating in the European-wide project entitled Fair with Air at School – Citizen Science Project which involves the monitoring of air quality by students.

Whilst enjoying some free time at Joanne Gardens-Tarxien, I have come across this tree with a broken branch caused by the gale force winds which hit Malta last February. Fortunately, this tree survived and may the authorities ensure that more trees are planted around the island to make Malta greener and less polluted.

Should we rest our minds when seeing this sight in a public garden? May the authorities ensure that for every fallen tree, new trees are planted.

Caring for our environment and respecting the countryside is vital in enriching green areas and allowing them to flourish. Rubble walls create a healthy habitat for a number of species, while helping maintain rich soil structures.

The impact of human civilisation has left very few spaces of natural beauty untouched. When developing, a balance between progress and natural resources need to be found. One cannot be at the cost of the other.

Unfortunately a lot of microplastics are ending up in the oceans. Such microplastics are being eaten up by the marine animals themselves. It is getting worse as time goes by. So are we getting the right nutrients from such fish or are we eating plastic?

Man can be very powerful in the face of a fragile mother nature that has been being abused of for centuries. When interacting with the world around us, it is important to approach with balance and a caring attitude.

As civilisation develops, green areas and places of natural beauty are being compromised and are diminishing to drastic points. Our interaction with nature should leave environments in a healthy or better state, rather than damaging it.
