Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like we’ll be getting rid of the masks any time soon. What has this got to do with litter? The use of disposable masks has escalated since the appearance of Covid 19. Most of the 8 billion global population are wearing masks. Thinking about the problems created by the dumping of these disposable masks can be saddening to say the least. But there is an alternative. The least we can do is to wear safe, reusable masks and at the same time we would be taking care of the environment! Less trash means a safer environment for us all! Make the swap and save the planet!

Our aim is to encourage families in our school community (and as many people as possible) to start using the No Junk Mail stickers. This should result in the elimination of hundreds of kilos of paper waste, eventually encouraging producers of such magazines and leaflets to find ways that are more sustainable and environmental friendly to reach potential costumers.

Reusable present wrappings – a gift to the environment! The video is a collaborative online project between the students of the Eco committee of Immaculate Conception School who used their wits and knowledge of online platforms to create a campaign aimed at reducing gift wrapping paper by offering simple but creative alternative gift wrapping ideas. These include reusing old fabric in order to design and sew reusable fabric bags which can be passed on with the gift itself. This video was created before Earth hour in March, and the main message is to spread awareness of the importance to turn off your lights when there is natural sunlight available, because lightbulbs use up a lot of power which ultimately causes pollution created by the power plants.

By going paperless in our school we contribute directly to reducing waste, water, and power use – which provide a cleaner and more sustainable world for our children in the future. Furthermore, by switching to the digital communication platform by means of digital tools, we do not only reach our classrooms but, we reach teachers, all parents, secretaries, students and all the school community. In this way, with this smart initiative we reach them just as when we used to reach them with information on paper BUT without creating any waste. I used 2 toy models … a polar bear and an arctic fox … which are both endangered. I wanted to create this video so that I could raise awareness about climate change and the effect our actions are leaving on nature. The background song is a song about climate change by One Republic. It is a song that is as if the world is speaking. The water had food coloring which is non-toxic and it was then used to water our plants, so no water was wasted. To shoot this video I had some help with setting up the camera and editing the video. The original video was 2.75 hours long and in the final video all the footage is present, it is just speeded up. The polar bear and the arctic fox fell from the ice as soon as it started melting … making us realize the imminence of the situation. We then turned on a fan to try to simulate weather in the arctic. Then we used a torch to simulate days and time passing by … the situation remaining unnoticed … the ice melting. In the reflection of the ice and water, one can see us moving and going on with our day. This symbolizes our actions being reflected on nature … our same actions which are destructing the environment.

This video aims to raise awareness on the misuse of plastic. Plastic has become such a common thing we use everyday. We take it for granted. But we seem to forget that this excessive use of plastic is causing a lot of harm in our environment, especially in the sea.
